Start of the hike
We have become such the outdoorsy people- hiking and biking and jogging, oh my! Today we went our first hiking adventure in the Sierra mountains north of Madrid. Once again Pablo found some information on trails and we decided to check it out. But as always we didn't quite have all the information to make our adventure smooth sailing but we survived and it was fun.
I'm not sure if it is cheating but we started our route at the top of the mountain and made our way down! But going down is hard especially on the knees and it wasn't all down hill either. We didn't have a map but the trails were nicely marked. The only problem was that there were so many different trails we were worried they wouldn't all end where we needed to go, the town of Cercedilla. First we stayed on the yellow trail and followed it until we ran into the white trail and then we come upon the main parking lot and had to figure out where to go from there. The main parking lot wasn't the town we need to be at and it was still far away so we found a map that showed the only trail that went to the town was the blue trail. Each trail is marked by a colored dot on the trees and you follow the dots. Our main problem of the day was we couldn't find where the blue trail started. Luckily only after about 10 minutes of searching we found the blue dot and made our way down to the town. We ate our picnic lunch and caught the train to take us back up the mountain. The train was really small and went right through the town. We felt like we were in Germany or Switzerland taking the train up a steep mountain only difference was there wasn't any snow!
We walked about 9 miles give or take and did in 4 and half hours. It was a nice sunny day but very cold. When we arrived at the top of the mountain at 9 am it was 35 degrees and when we returned at 2 pm it was still 35 degrees. We weren't exactly prepared but we survived. It just makes you walk faster!
