Pablo's Good Deed

This past sunday Pablo went on a 3 hour bike ride with his biking buddies outside Madrid in a town called Guadalix. He left early, 8:30, and enjoyed a very sunny day in Madrid. Around 3 I started making lunch, wondering where Pablo is because he had been gone a long time. About this time I get a call from downstairs. I look out the window and see Pablo. He tells me to come down and I ask why? He just says come down. I say ok and then turn away from the window but turn right back to look out again and see Pablo's car with a dog in the back. I said, "Why do you have a dog in your car??"
I get downstairs and Pablo tells me how he found this lost dog walking around a gas station off the freeway. He tells me that after the ride they stopped to have a beer before heading home. They sat outside because it was such a nice day and this is when Pablo saw the dog walking around the gas station and she didn't seem to have an owner. Pablo asked everyone at the gas station, and at the restaurant and bar next to the gas station if she was anyone's dog and everyone said no. Pablo said they were pretty close to the animal shelter that he volunteers at so he loaded the dog into his car and went to the shelter. Well living in Spain you become use to having everything being closed on Sunday- this means the animal shelter as well. The dog had a collar but no information and so Pablo hoped the shelter could scan to see if he had a micro chip and then we could find the owner. But because it was closed there was no other option- the dog was coming home.
I was a little freaked out because it was a pretty big dog, we have a small apartment, what do we do with it, oh and we have ALKIE! We brought the dog up to the house and gave her water and old cat food that we had. She was pretty thirsty and lapped up the water pretty fast. This is when I realized we could never have a dog in this house. She lapped it up so fast that water went everywhere, she dripped everywhere, she seemed to take over everything.
Pablo decided the first thing he had to do was wash the dog so he went on an adventure to find a dog washing station at a gas station. I was left at home to make lunch and eat by myself and think about what are we going to do with the dog for a night.
When Pablo got home we decided to take her on a long walk and enjoyed the last part of the afternoon. When we got home we pretty much wore her out so we her made a little bed and tied her leash to the radiator and let her relax a little. We don't know how long she had been missing and she seemed pretty tired.

Alkie was frightened at first, all his fur sticking up and they growled at each other but after awhile he became more and more curious and got closer and closer to the dog but we both kept an eye on them, we didn't want a fight.
The dog from the beginning was very friendly and loving. She loved attention and she would always roll on to her back and want her belly rubbed so we fell in love with her. When we prepared for bed we put her in the kitchen free to walk around but with the door shut. She kind of put up a fight banging on the door and then started crying but she was so tired that she finally passed out. I didn't sleep well, worried about the dog, but she only cried a couple time throughout the night.
This morning Pablo brought the dog to the animal shelter hoping to find the owner. Pablo was nervous that the dog had been abandoned or had a bad family and ran away. It was obvious by the way she acted, wanting loves and attention, that she came from a family. Plus she had an updated rabies shot tag so I had a feeling she wasn't abandoned. Then a few hours later Pablo sent me a text message saying it was a happy ending. Her name is Cabana (like copa cabana) and she is 7 years old. When they called the owner she cried and said she was coming to pick her up. When I saw the message I cried too. I'm so happy she has such a nice owner to go home to because she is such the sweetest dog and deserves all the love she can get.

Pablo and his pets

Pablo has recently started volunteering at the animal shelter where we found Alkie, ANAA. Pablo has always loved animals especially dogs and for a long time has been looking for a place where he could work with animals- mostly dogs! Long before we adopted Alkie, Pablo was researching different shelters around Madrid where he could volunteer and where we could possibly adopt. We were lucky to find such a great organization in ANAA because we found Alkie there but also in the fact is a very professional and well-ran organization. Pablo signed up to be a volunteer months ago and about a month back finally heard from them and was signed up a weekend seminar for new volunteers.
Pablo loves working for them and feels they are doing a great job with the animals. They are a no kill shelter so they always have a lot of animals but also great facilities with plenty of indoor and outdoor areas for both dogs and cats. Here is the link to their website http://www.anaaweb.org/
Because of his work schedule Pablo has the opportunity to go quite often to the shelter and help them out and learn the ropes. Every time he comes home after a day there he is filled with stories about all the animals and he has developed a crush on at least two or three. I think one of these days he is going to come home with another dog or cat.

Mountain Biking- the Movie!

A couple years ago Pablo bought a mini camera off Ebay. Not sure why he bought it or what he wanted to use it for originally but now he is using it to create his own mountain bike adventure videos. It took him awhile to figure out the best place to put his camera to record the best video but he finally placed it in the middle of his sunglasses and decide there was the best place. So you don't get to see him but you get to see his ride and the two people he rides with and the Pardo where he usually rides. The Pardo is this open area right by our house that is full of trees and trails perfect for the mountain bike.
Here is his first edited video of a ride he did last weekend.

Trip to Seattle and Long Beach

I just got home from a great trip to Seattle and Long Beach. It was a random trip that was a result of a round trip ticket I had bought April of last year to come to Spain. At the time I had no idea when I would be returning to Seattle so I pushed my return date out as far as possible- February 2011.
And then the day arrived so I went home!
We had first thought Pablo would come but because we plan to be home in August and again at Christmas we decided we had to save our pennies. This left me free to enjoy family and friends but of course it ended up being a whirlwind trying to schedule everything so I could see everyone and do everything.
I spent a week in Seattle visiting family and friends and stuffing my face full of food. I was lucky to squeeze everyone in even if it was just a short time- it really made me happy to see familiar faces again, speak without thinking, and see that not much had really changed. It is very comforting to return to home!
I informed my mom of my long list of food must haves while home and here is the list:
Round Table Pizza
Tortilla Chips
BBQ Chips
Steak
7-11 Big Gulp
Free Diet Coke refills
Chips & Salsa
White Enchiladas
Artichoke dip
Tillamook Cheese
Taco Bar
Blue Moon beer
Sushi
Sour cream

After my week in Seattle I went to Long Beach with my mom to visit my sister. She is in basketball season so for her to get time away is impossible so if I wanted to see her I had to go too her. Lucky for us she lives in Long Beach with direct flights daily so it was super easy. My dad joined us a day later and we spent the few days together bbq-ing and drinking lots of beer. We went to Laura's last regular season game so we could check her out in action. Also while down there my mom and went Santa Monica to visit my cousin at the restaurant she works at and walked along the pier.
It ended up snowing the entire time I was in Seattle (super weird!) so we were lucky to have a couple nice sunny days in LA to make up for the cold and snow!
Here are some pictures from my trip to Long Beach (didn't take any in Seattle and didn't even bring my camera home!)

Tapa Tour in Mieres

While we were up in Mieres to get my NIE (resident card) it just so happened that there was a tapa tour happening in Mieres. This means that different bars around town that are participating have a special tapa to serve at a special price. Usually there is a competition but we couldn't figure out how to vote so I'm not really sure of the point of this tapa tour, but I didn't care, if there is a tapa tour, I'm going! We did one awhile back in Madrid and thought it was the best thing ever. The only problem with the Mieres one was that there wasn't a drink included in the special price so you had to pay separately but when wine only costs 2 euros it isn't that big of deal!
Here are pictures of all our fancy tapas!
Rabo del toro with some sort of gold cracker(bull's tail)
Baby squid
Mystery meat with mussels (this was one tapa!)

Finally Legal!

The 18th of February I finally became a legal resident of Spain when I picked up my foreign resident card in Oviedo. I am now free to live and work here for at least five years. It kind of seems surreal since it took almost a year of paperwork to accomplish this feat! After all of the steps it took us to get married, then actually marry and then start the process of obtaining residency it has been a crazy year and a half. Lets just say I learned a lot about government workers in Spain and how the legal system works in regards to foreigners- it ain't pretty!
Here is a very UGLY picture of me right after I walked out of the foreigner office with my card
