Gabriela´s accident

We had our first major parenting failure with Gabriela on a normal Sunday afternoon at the park. We weren´t watching her climb up a slide, which she had already climbed up and gone down 4 previous times, and she fell from the top of the ladder on her arm. At first we had no idea how bad it was and didn´t know what to do. None of us had broken a bone so we didn´t know what to look for. We went home and iced it and gave her some pain meds. We didn´t see any swelling or brusing so we were thinking it was just a sprain. We got her ready for bed and put her down and she fell asleep. But she woke up a couple hours later in pain and that is when I finally found the swelling so we decided to take her to the hospital to get it checked out at around midnight. Lucky for us there wasn´t any wait in the er and she got to see a doctor and get an x-ray in less than 30 minutes. Private hospitals in Spain have some perks!
We found out she had a broken bone in her wrist. They wrapped it up and we had to come back the next morning to get a cast, which she wore for 20 days. Gabriela did great with everything even though she milked her boo-boo for all its worth. Mommy gave her all the candy and tv she wanted for a day! Of course we felt very guilty but Gabriela is very active for a two year old. She has no problem running up and down and all around and without any fear an accident was bound to happen no matter how closely we tried to protect her. She is extremely independent and wants to do everything herself and we give her a lot of freedom to test and learn on her own. We hope not to have any more broken bones in our future though and we all learned a lesson. Gabriela is a tough cookie and has no fear of slides or anything else after this experience!
