Goonie´s Retirement

We had a very emotional weekend last week when we participated in our last Canicross races with Goonie. Unfortunately, we had to retire Goonie from competetive racing because he has osteoarthritis in his shoulder and is in a lot of pain when he runs. He hasn´t quite figured out that running is the reason it hurts and wants to run all the time and ends up limping all around. But he is happy and otherwise healthy for a soon to be 9 year old.
Pablo ran with him the popular race of about 1 mile as a send off and sadly he came into the finish limping. Pablo decided to carry him across the finish line as Gabriela ran in after them to help. It was extremely emotional for the both of us. We have really enjoyed our family hobby and it will be sad to say goodbye. Goonie lost all of his fears when running and the bond between Pablo and Goonie grew even stronger. We will always remember the fun we had and thank Goonie for being a part of it with us and having to pull Pablo through all those races!
Luckily, Goonie rested up and was good to go for the kids race of 600 meters with Gabriela and I. Gabriela loves to run with Goonie and was so excited to participate. 9 months pregnant mommy was a little scared of moving this huge body for all to see but it ended up being great. Gabriela pretty much ran the entire way and mommy had to keep up. Goonie had a nice easy jog and we all made it to the finish! The best part for Gabriela was getting another medal to add to her collection!
